A Personal Review of "The Nativity Story"

I was fortunate enough to be invited to see The Nativity Story yesterday at a private viewing. The man who is the producer, Marty Bowen is from our area, and he set this up for his family, friends, and other folks like me who work in the diocese.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The cinematography is beautiful; my understanding is the movie was filmed in Italy and Morocco, depending on the scenes. The settings for Nazareth, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and all the other sites seemed so realistic to me, I really felt transported in to that time and world.

The acting was very well done. The young girl who played Mary was the girl who was in Whale Rider a few years back. She brought a humanity to Mary that I haven’t seen depicted in a Nativity movie in quite some time. I especially like the young actor who played Joseph. I really felt the dilemma and anguish he must have gone through during the whole ordeal of the pregnancy, the trip to Bethlehem, the birth, and the subsequent flight into Egypt. One of the things I also enjoyed was the way you saw Mary and Joseph grow together as a couple and begin to experience what I sensed was the beginnings of love for each other. Yes, I’m a romantic at heart, but I felt like there was something definitely stirring. The other actors did equally well in their roles and brought to life some characters that often get a brief mention and are then forgotten, like Ann and Joachim and Elizabeth and Zachariah. The Three Kings were a delight to watch in the movie. They provided a touch of comic relief and as well as a reason to understand their other moniker, the “wisemen”.

For folks with children older than 10 – about the 4th grade and up range, I would say go to see this movie, and bring your kids. Leave the little ones home with a sitter, the opening piece with the Roman soldiers killing the male children in Bethlehem is not extremely graphic, but it would be scary for a young child. It’s one thing to share a bible story with a child about the death of the Holy Innocents; it’s another for a 6 year old to see it played out on the big screen. The movie is rated PG, and I think that’s a fair rating.

Happy Thanksgiving to all, and if you get a chance to hit the movie when it opens Dec. 1st, it gets a thumbs up from Rita.

Prolife Across America
"The Billboard People"

This group puts up billboards all across America, such as the one shown here. We have 3 such billboards in Wyoming and would like to have one in/near every town! This is quite expensive and your donations can help! You can donate through their web-site or by mail. If you do, make sure that you write on the envelope "Wyoming" or let them know that when you donate on the web. ALL of the money that is donated by and for Wyoming IS USED IN WYOMING!! The money is used to maintain the billboards and to put up new ones. This can be a great way for a family to donate to this wonderful, educational and non-political method of geting the knowledge out about the sacred-ness of all life, from conception to natural death.

*Express Your Concern
Consider the Following:

How can you take action by Turning Off the TV for a Day (or more)

Try a day without TV
Do something that builds family love, brings blessing to others, or improves your own life. Sone ideas: Give the Cook a night off - have dinner at a restaurant. Have friends or family overr for dinner. Go toa local museum or sporting event. See a good film or play. Take a long walk (if the weather permits). Play your favorite board game. Read a good book. Help out at your favorite charity. Fix that leaky faucet.

File indecency complaints with the Federqal Communications Commission
The Parents' Television Council Web site has a page that lets you file an indecency complaint with the Federal Communications Commission. Here's the URL: https://www.parentstv.org/actionalert/fccform.asp

Contact sponsors if you see immoral or objectional content on TV
The OneMillionMoms.com and OneMillionDads.com Web sites, which are projects of the American Family Association, allow you to e-mail letters of complaint to TV networks, stations, and sponsors of offensive programming.

Pledge to promote responsible, moral, and ethical media
The Catholic Bishops of the United States, in their publication Renewing the Mind of the Media, suggest that families take this pledge.

  • Contact a media outlet to approve or disapprove of a particular program, recording, video, movie, publication, or Web site.
  • Use media together with your family - watch a TV program, go to a movie, share a news paper or magazine article, view a Web site and discuss its meaning and implication for your lives.
  • Trade one hour a week using media for an hour in prayer.
  • Seek out and use media that explore faith and spiritual issues.
  • Skip a few movies or rental videos and use the money saved to help someone in need.
  • Offer an explanation the next time I tell my children not to watch or read something.
  • Monitor the amount of time my family spends on the Internet and pay particular attention to the Web sites that my children may explore.
  • Use reliable sources for evaluating what movies and television programs to watch.

Holy Cross/Family Rosary/Family Prayer

Check out this site!!! They have alot of information on the Rosary and Family Life. The address is: www.hcfm.org and click on the Family Rosay link for solid information on the Rosary, from the history of it, how to pray the rosary and all the mysteries of the rosary. There are also retreats and much, much more!

FAMILY PRAYERS: These are Scripture based family prayer/discussion/activities that are appropriate for any family. Check them out at http://www.hcfm.org/main/prayer-family.php The following is a sample.

READINGS:
1. Acts 10:34, 37-43
2. Colossians 3:1-4
3. Gospel John 20:1-9

REFLECTION: We usually think of Easter as the shining forth of Christ’s glory to his followers. But if we take a closer look at the Scriptures that describe his various appearances after the resurrection, we will find their coming to believe was a gradual process. If we look only to the blaze of resurrection, we can miss the quiet bits of risen life that come to warm, encourage and to cheer.

PRAYER: God, our Father, you give us the joy of recalling the rising of Christ to new life. May the joy of our Easter celebration reflect itself in all that we say and do. Amen.

FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:

Monday:
Easter Monday has long been a day to take a spring walk, sometimes called an “Emmaus Walk.” This was named for the walk Jesus took with the disciples after the resurrection. Take a walk with someone today.

Tuesday:
Easter is indeed the greatest of all Christian feasts, so important that 50 days are needed to do it justice. Pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary today with the family. Remember there are 50 Hail Mary’s in the rosary. Pray them for peace.

Wednesday:
Another name for Easter Week is White Week. This comes from the white garments worn by the newly baptized. At the family meal today, bring out any baptismal clothing to display, also a bowl of clear water on the table that everyone can use to bless themselves.

Thursday:
The early Christians sold what they had and shared according to each one’s needs. Review today how you share what you have with those in need.

Friday:
Reflect today on the world situation of war and peace. Jesus still rises from the dead through us, through our daily rising out of doubt, despair, resentment, and hopelessness.

Saturday:
Discuss with the family at the dinner table how Easter’s secular side reflects its religious foundations, i.e., flowers, springtime, finery, eggs.

PRAYER:
Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of Angels! Exult, all creation around God’s throne! Jesus Christ, our King, is risen! Sound the trumpet of Salvation! Amen.

"Half-Moon and Empty Stars", by Gerry Spence.
The setting of this book is Wyoming and the main characters are on a fictional Indian Reservation Mr Spence gives a look at the judicial system of the United States that makes one pause and rethink our very basic beliefs of justice. Although this writing pertains to the death penalty in our justice system, Mr. Spence points out the underlying reality of the death for all from conception to old age or illness. An excerpt from chapter 37 follows:

"The death penalty, killing without responsibility, was a gift to all who hated, to all who were angry, to all who feared, to all who suffered twisted psyches, to all who did not care because no one ever cared for them. It was a gift to all who could not love."
